I have seen cutscene movies before on YouTube and decided to go with the popular game the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The movie was a little under two hours long. The first half was extremely repetitive after telling us the major conflict of the game. I learned through the cutscenes that I had to reclaim four Divine Beasts and release the souls of their original guardians. It was obvious that I was missing a lot of gameplay between the scenes since the cutscene would automatically jump to the newest Beast and a flashback to its guardian before cutting to after a battle to see that you as the player had won back control of the Beast and the spirit of the guardian could once again take over. This happened each time. The second half of the movie was purely memories, mainly focusing on Princess Zelda and her failed attempts to unlock her powers. Because the cutscenes were mostly memories and flashbacks, they served mostly to just dive deeper into Zelda’s character and to witness her struggles and feelings of helplessness. It was unnecessary for the gameplay, but gave the player nice character development. Based on this movie, I am torn on Brandon Jacobs’ statement that cinematic cutscenes are lazy. I feel like the cutscenes in Breath of the Wild added to the story, but it was very clear that I was missing a lot of information about minor characters and what was happening on the more basic scale because I was not seeing the game play. I would agree that some games do rely way too much on the cutscenes to tell a story, but I felt like Breath of the Wild was able to work around this and marry the story with the game. I was more invested in the side characters because of their backstories shown in the movie, but I knew nothing of the characters in the present, which is where the game took place. Yes, I think I could have been able to enjoy the game without and still have known the storyline, but I liked how Breath of the Wild told its story.
